Navratri – Worshipping Different Forms of Mother Goddess

Sharda Navratra is a festival of great religious, moral, spiritual and universal importance. During this time, the nine different forms of Mother Goddess are worshipped.

Pratipada or Kalash sthapana Diwas

It is on Pratipada of Ashwin Shukla Paksha that is 25th September of 2014 that the Shardiya Navratra will begin. It is observed by establishing a Kalash signifying auspiciousness of the fast for these nine days. It is believed to be Lord Ganesha residing in it and hence he is worshipped at the beginning. Then Ganga Jal is sprinkled and cow dung is used to purify everything. A mixture of seven sands is used to establish the Kalash.

Through this worship, the Gods, nine planets, Yoginis are invited to reside in that Kalash. Five different types of leaves, coins, betel nuts and sand of seven types are used to decorate. Seven types of grains and barleys are sowed just beneath the Kalash and harvested on Dashami.

Dwitiya – Worshipping Mother Brahmacharini

Mata Brahmacharini has an ascetic look. To please her, Lotus and Hibiscus is used. According to scriptures Mata Brahmacharini likes these. Tantras and mantras are used to worship her.

Tritiya – Worshipping Mother Chandraghanta

Mother Chandraghanta is the goddess of internal and spiritual powers. She is worshipped so that all hurdles in life can be removed. However, in 2014, Tritiya and Chaturthi has a merging and hence, this puja will be done on Chaturthi.

Chaturthi – Worshipping Goddess Kushmanda

Goddess Kushmanda has eight hands and hence is called Ashtabhuja Devi.  She holds a Lotus garland in her hands. When you worship her with devotion, she will bless you with a removal of diseases, problems and pains.

Panchami – Worshipping Goddess Skand

This is the on which Mother Goddess Mata Skand also known as Skand Kumar is worshipped. The name is derived as Mata Skand is the mother of Kumar Kartikeya. That is why this form of Shakti is associated with motherly affection. Worshipping her has peaceful after effects on the devotees and they are blessed with prosperity at home.

Shashthi – Worshipping Goddess Katyayani

On this day Goddess Katyayani is worshipped to gain salvation. Her name is derived from the fact that she was born in the house of Katyayan, a sage. It is this form of Mother Goddess that took the guise of Devi Amba to kill Mahishashur. The puja takes place in Godhuli Bela.

Saptami – Worshipping Mata Kaalratri

Mata Kaalratri blesses with Riddhi Siddhi. It is a very auspicious day for meditations. It is from this day that worshipping Mother Goddess becomes public and open to all.

Ashtami – Worshipping Mahagauri

This is the most powerful form of Mother Goddess. According to the scriptures, Mahagauri was worshipped on the banks of river Ganga by the Gods to save them from the demons. Therefore, worshipping her, keeps her devotees hale and hearty and keeps them from troubles.

Navami – Worshipping Goddess Siddhidatri

The last form of Mother Goddess is Mata Siddhidatri. She removes all pains from this world and beyond. These forms of Goddess Mother are worshipped by the Gods as well.
